Almost, Maine Opens July 18

Almost1-300x222Marin Summer Theater opens its second production of the season with Almost, Maine on July 18, 19, 20 20, and 21 at Novato High School in the Performing Arts Center. A play by John Cariani, Almost, Maine has been warming hearts and charming audiences since it was first produced at the Portland Stage Company in 2004.  Since then, Almost, Maine has traveled to Broadway, all over the United States and around the world.

Sometimes referred to as “A Mid-Winter Night’s Dream”, Almost,Maine takes place on a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter. All is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night's dream.

Almost2-300x240Featuring a cast of eight actors with each playing multiple rolls, Almost, Maine is a gentle, funny play with surprising moments. Included in the cast are Alicia Kraft and Ryan Rohtla of Novato, James Carter of Oakland, Hannah Bloom of San Rafael, and Andie Fitch, Andrew Wolff, Danny Ford and Jessica LaFever of San Francisco.

Almost, Maine is directed by Nancy Carlin. Nancy has directed productions for Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Center Rep, Foothill Theatre, TJT, Aurora Theatre, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare, B St, and ACT’s MFA program. Her acting credits include ACT, Berkeley Rep, San Jose Rep, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Cal Shakes. She teaches at UCSC and has received numerous awards from the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle. This is Carlin’s first season with MST.

Almost, Maine highlights the magical nature of love and human connections on one starry night under the extraordinary aurora borealis,” Carlin said. “It's very funny and very poignant. Everyone can relate to these very human characters struggling to communicate their feelings.”

“I have really been enjoying the incredibly talented, enthusiastic, and friendly young performers, designers, and technicians at MST. And the scenes in Almost, Maine are wonderful scenes for actors to delve into. We're having a lot of fun,” Carlin said.
