A modern dramatic masterpiece, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead is the fabulously inventive tale of Hamlet as told from the worm’s-eye view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeare’s play. In Tom Stoppard’s best-known work, this Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy finally get a chance to take the lead role, but do so in a world where reality and illusion intermix, and where fate leads our two heroes to a tragic but inevitable end.

The play opens with the title characters alone on stage, placing bets on the toss of a coin while traveling toward Elsinore, the castle of Danish King Claudius and their childhood friend, Prince Hamlet. Ros & Guild inhabit a world completely beyond their comprehension. Unsure of where they are going (and even of who they are and where they come from), they depend upon others to give their lives meaning.

RosGuil-photo1 Marin Summer Theater (MST) presents the comedy Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead on July 2223 24 and 25 as the second offering of its 2010 season. In this comic masterpiece by Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Laurel and Hardy like clowns who are thrust into the middle of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. They don’t know why they are there or what they are supposed to do. They can’t even keep their own names straight while Hamlet, Ophelia, the players and all of the other characters of Hamlet barge in from all sides.
